asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the grant to the Sports Council in 1972, 1973 and 1974, respectively.

In the financial year 1972–73 grant of £3.62 million was paid to the Sports Council; and in 1973–74—subject to confirmation—£5 million. Grant of up to £6.7 million has been offered for 1974–75. This includes an additional £200,000 which, subject to parliamentary approval, I have recently offered to the council so as to enable work to start this year on the new covered stand at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre.
