Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the weekly average take-home pay, after tax deductions etc., of a labourer at the Simonstown base, expressed in sterling at current exchange rates.

Mr. Judd

As I explained in my Answer on 17th July, the Ministry of Defence employs two classes of labourers on the staff of the Senior British Naval Officer South Africa in Simonstown. Their weekly average pay is £24.56. Full information on deductions is not immediately available and I will write to my hon. Friend.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence, if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the rates of pay of civilians employed at the Simonstown base.

The Ministry of Defence employs 14 locally engaged civilians on the staff of the Senior British Naval Officer South Africa in Simonstown. Their rates of pay are as follows:
