HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc264-5W
Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the hazards of rabies in view of the extent of this disease amongst wildlife in northern Europe and the active movement of domestic animals between the United Kingdom and neighbouring continental countries.

Mr. Bishop

The continuing spread of rabies in wildlife in Europe is of course disquieting. However, all domestic mammals coming from the Continent are subject to rabies control and quarantine. Our powers to deal with rabies, should the disease occur outside quarantine, have been strengthened by the Rabies Act 1974.
