HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc316-7W
Mr. Hill

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken to co-ordinate the discussions in Brussels on a common ports policy and the need for a ports policy within the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mulley

The Commission has undertaken to keep Governments informed of its contacts with port authorities and others, and will consider what proposals for a ports policy should be put to the Council of Ministers (Transport) when a fact-finding investigation has been concluded.

Mr. Hill

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will review the decision of the Government accepting the financial responsibility of dredging the access water routes to the major ports of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mulley

No.

Mr. Hill

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in establishing a ports policy for the United Kingdom, he will give priority over all other investments to the road and rail infrastructure, with particular reference to cases such as that of Southampton which has no major road and rail link direct to the industrial Midlands.
