asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total sum remitted in tax relief on mortgage interest payments for house purchase to owner occupiers in the latest available period of 12 months; and what was the number of households which benefited.

, pursuant to his reply [29th July 1974], gave the following information:

For 1973–74 some 5¼ million people qualified for tax relief on mortgage interest payments at a cost of about £500 million.
