HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc232-3W
Mr. Hunt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated cost of increasing by £100 the amount of income a child can earn before his or her parents have their child allowance reduced.

Dr. Gilbert

It is estimated that to increase the child's income limit for full child allowance from £115 to £215 would cost about £3 million for a full year.

Mr. Hunt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the limit was last fixed by for the amount of income a child can earn before his or her parent have their child allowance reduced.

Dr. Gilbert

The limit of child's income was fixed at £115 in 1963. At that time no child allowance was due if the child's income was more than this; the rule under which the allowance is not wholly lost as soon as the child's income exceeds that amount, but is instead reduced by £1 for each £ of the excess, came into operation for the tax year 1964–65.
