Mr. Normanton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what views were expressed by the spokesman for the British Textile Corporation to his noble Friend the Minister of State on 24th July concerning the consequences to the British textile industry were the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Economic Community.

Mr. Meacher

The Minister of State for Industry's 24th July meeting with the British Textile Confederation covered a variety of questions of interest to the United Kingdom textile industry. During these discussions the confederation representatives informed the Minister of State for Industry that their preliminary assessment was that they considered United Kingdom withdrawal from the EEC would adversely effect the United Kingdom textile industry.
