asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will give the number of rural modernisation projects in the United Kingdom which have been approved under the first instalment for 1973 of the FEOGA policy section of the EEC; how much is to be given in total grant aid; and whether he will list the individual projects.

No schemes specifically for rural modernisation were included in the first list of successful applications for individual capital projects under EEC Regulation No. 17/64. As regards the total amount of grant to be given, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which was given to my hon. Friend the Member for Carmarthen (Mr. Gwynoro Jones) on 18th July 1974.

The list of successful projects is as follows: Construction of a wholesale food market at Birmingham. Construction of a Cheddar cheese-making factory in Sorbie, Wigtownshire. Construction of a factory for the manufacture of hard pressed cheese together with facilities for whey drying, manufacture of whey products, manufacture of butter and skim powder drying at Maelor in Clwyd. Expansion and re-equipment of Stilton cheese factory at Hartington in Derbyshire. Construction and equipping of egg packing station at Dowton, Wiltshire: extension and equipping of station at Worplesdon, Surrey and equipping of station at Thornbury, Gloucestershire. Reorganisation of drainage of Upwell Fen (Cambridgeshire). Construction of a new pumping station on the Ten Mile River, Cambridgeshire. Construction of a new seed handling complex at Rotherwell, Lincolnshire. Construction of flood prevention embankments on a 40 kilometre length of the river Lugg near Hereford. Construction of two water pumping stations at Appleby Carrs and North Kelsey Carrs (both in Lincolnshire) together with drain improvement. Replacement of obsolete horticultural and fish wholesale market by modern market in Bradford (Yorkshire). Construction of a fishing vessel to be based at Whalsay, Shetland. Construction and equipping of eight fishing vessels to be based at Peterhead (North East Scotland). Implementation of Middleton stop and Pierre-point drain scheme on east bank of river Great Ouse (Norfolk). Implementation of various flood prevention measures on Sudell Brook (Lancashire). Construction of two beef production research units, one at Sutton Bonington (Leicester-shire), the other at Ingliston (Edinburgh). Extension and modernisation of cheese manufacturing capacity and installation of whey processing facilities at Llandyrnog Creamery (Denbighshire). Construction of a flume tank for testing modern trawls at Hull. Extension and improvement of a co-operative grass drying plant at Holton-le-Clay (Lincolnshire). Construction of a cold store and blast freezing plant at Craigavon (Co. Armagh), Hillhall (Antrim) and Belfast. Construction of a central grain drying, cleaning and storage centre at Wimblington (Cambridgeshire). Land draining works on an agricultural estate near Skipton (West Riding of Yorkshire). Construction of a central grain drying, cleaning and storage plant at Coupar Angus (Perthshire). Construction of broiler processing facilities at Dungannon (Co. Tyrone) and expansion of broiler production and transport facilities over a wide area of Northern Ireland. Construction of a wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Belfast (Northern Ireland). Construction of cheesemaking and milk products factory at Lockerbie (Dumfriesshire). Construction of seven water pumping stations and associated works in Witham Valley (Lincoln). Implementation of various flood prevention measures on the river Wharfe, between Ulleskelf and Tadcaster (Yorkshire). Implementation of various flood prevention and land drainage improvement measures between Selby and Sherburn-in-Elmet, and on Winstead Drain (Yorkshire). Modernisation and expansion of bacon and pork factory at Norton (Yorkshire). Extension of research laboratory for examination of toxcological problems relating to agricultural and processed food products at Carshalton (Surrey). Construction of a pig slaughtering and processing factory near Londonderry (Northern Ireland). Construction of a fish processing plant at Belfast (Northern Ireland).
