HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 c162W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total salary bill for local government officers in the years 1971–72 and 1973–74.

Mr. William Ross

For rating services, excluding revenue-producing undertakings and housing—i.e., largely teachers, police, etc.—the cost to local authorities in Scotland of salaries and wages together with superannuation, national insurance and allowances was as follows:

£ million
1971–72 293
1973–74 394(estimate)

The information as to administration costs is not available separately, as this is reckoned as a component in the cost of each service.
