asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many houses have been purchased or rented, respectively, in Northern Ireland for civil servants in the Northern Ireland Office since 1969; what has been the total cost of purchase of each house; what money has been spent in renovating or furnishing the houses; and what is the annual outgoings on such houses.

The number of houses purchased is 22 and the number rented is two. Responsibility for purchase and any eventual disposal lies with the Department of the Environment (Property Services Agency) as for all property required for the public service. The total cost of houses purchased to date is £405,225, the price of each varying according to the responsibilities and needs of the ocupant. The responsibility for any renovation and furnishings lies with the Department of the Environment (Property Services Agency) as does that for the annual outgoings.
