HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc102-3W
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will consider a change in the law to enable young persons of 16 years to take up weekend jobs.

Dr. Owen

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to those still of compulsory school age. Existing local bye-laws permit 16-year-old schoolchildren to work at weekends within certain limits. The byelaws are to be replaced by regulations under the Employment of Children Act 1973, which are now being prepared after widespread consultation.
