HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc101-2W
Mr. Ovenden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will arrange for the Supplementary Benefits Commission to waive the requirement to register for work as a condition of supplementary benefit in respect of widowers, divorced men and deserted fathers with dependent children.

Mr. O'Malley

Under the Supplementary Benefit Acts this is a matter for the commission to decide, subject to the right of appeal to a local appeal tribunal. I am informed that the commission does not normally require a lone father to register for work unless it is clear that satisfactory arrangements for the children to be looked after can reasonably be made. The commission is, however, considering the recommendation on this matter by the Committee on One-Parent Families.
