HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 c82W
Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the position and safety of British tourists in Greece, including the Greek islands; and when he expects the airports there to be reopened to enable tourists to travel back to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Hattersley

I have not heard that any British tourists in Greece have been harmed and I believe them to be in no immediate danger. They are, however, suffering the discomfort, inconvenience and uncertainty which must be expected in the present situation. However, some restrictions have already been relaxed.

The main Greek airports are now open. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has been in the closest touch with the Association of British Travel Agents from the beginning of the Cyprus emergency. Our current advice to them, and to private holidaymakers, is that tourists should not travel to Greece, except for Corfu, and that tourists already there should curtail their stay and return to Britain. We shall keep this advice under constant review.
