HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc71-2W
Mr. Blaker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the likely receipts by the United Kingdom from the European Social Fund in 1974.

Number completing training Number placed in employment on completion of training
Able bodied Disabled Total Able bodied Disabled Total
1969 242 43 285 226 37 263
1970 252 46 298 244 38 282
1971 255 38 293 210 29 239
1972 292 41 333 222 35 257
1973 355 35 390 309 28 337

Over the five years as a whole 86 per cent. of trainees were placed in employment on completion of training. Most of the rest were placed within a short time. The statistics are derived from counts taken at spot dates. Because of the time lag which sometimes occurs between a trainee finishing training and beginning work, the individuals shown as placed in the period covered by the count are not necessarily the same as those who have completed training. Precise information about the number of unemployed trainees included in the table above is not available. However, the proportion of unemployed people applying for training varied from about 50 per cent. to 70 per cent. of the total.

Sir W. Elliott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number

Mr. John Fraser

I cannot say what the total receipts in respect of expenditure in 1974 are likely to be. The United Kingdom has so far applied for assistance from the European Social Fund for 1974 totalling about £45 million. A considerable number of member States' applications have yet to be considered by the advisory committee on the Social Fund and by the Commission.
