HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc82-3W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what support is being given by the United Kingdom Government to the concept of biosphere reserves put forward by UNESCO and endorsed by the USA and USSR; whether a British scientist will be present at the UNESCO meeting on this matter in Washington in September; and, if so, who.

Mr. Ennals

The United Kingdom has played a major part in drawing up the guidelines for such reserves. The third session of the International Co-ordinating Council for the Man and the Biosphere Programme will be held in Washington in September and will cover all aspects of this programme, including the question of biosphere reserves. The United Kingdom, as a member of the International Co-ordinating Council, will be sending a delegation to this meeting. The delegation will be led by Mr. J. N. R. Jeffers, Deputy Director of the Natural Environment Research Council Institute of Terrestrial Ecology.
