HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc28-9W
33. Mr. Allason

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on the prospects of a reduction in aircraft noise to one-sixth of the present level.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The prospects for a reduction of aircraft noise up to 1990 were set out in Chapter 6 of the Report published on 18th July entitled "Maplin—Review of Airport Project". It is expected that by 1990, when the new quieter aircraft will largely have replaced the existing types of aircraft, there will be a marked reduction in noise. It is forecast that, by that date, the number of people living within the 35 NNI contours around the four London airports would fall to one-fifth or one-sixth of the present numbers.
