asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will institute an immediate inquiry into the basis of taxation of pensions for war widows.

Although my right hon. Friend fully appreciates the claims of war widows on the nation, he does not believe that special tax reliefs are the appropriate way to recognise them. As part of this summer's pension up-rating, war widows' pensions are being increased by the greatest amount ever; moreover, for elderly war widows the age allowances are being doubled.
