HC Deb 25 July 1974 vol 877 c564W
Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many gipsies are foreign born, or have parents who were foreign born, at present in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Oakes

The information as to the origin of birth of gipsies is not available.

Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many gipsy families are at present resident in the United Kingdom;

(2) how many caravan sites he expects to be provided in England, Wales and Scotland as a result of the implementation of the Caravan Sites Act 1968.

Mr. Oakes

It is estimated that in England and Wales there are probably something approaching 5,000 gipsy families.

There are at present pitches for over 1,400 caravans. The requirements of the Act will demand that rather more pitches are provided than the number of gipsy families, but I cannot be specific as to numbers.
