HL Deb 24 July 1974 vol 353 cc1852-3WA
LORD HAWKE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any say in the matter of the style in which New Towns are built. If so, whether they will look into the sad deterioration in the aesthetic quality of the architecture in the new neighbourhoods of Crawley New Town when compared with that of the older neighbourhoods.

LORD GARNSWORTHY

It is the development corporation who have the primary responsibility for securing the development of a new town and for the style in which this is done. At Crawley the development corporation was dissolved in 1962, and the more recent development which has been carried out either by the Commission for the New Towns, private builders or the Borough Council, has been subject to approval by the local planning authority in the normal way.
