HC Deb 24 July 1974 vol 877 c468W
51. Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the Alkali Inspectorate's system of monitoring the emission of various substances and toxic chemicals into the atmosphere and waterways by industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell

The Alkali and Clean Air Inspectorate is responsible for the control of emissions to the atmosphere only from works registered under the Alkali Act. I am satisfied that it is capable of monitoring those emissions. The Inspectorate is not responsible for monitoring waterborne pollution.
