Mr. Townsend

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average cost, including land, of constructing (a) three-bedroom council houses and (b) three-bedroom council flats in Bexley-heath at the latest convenient date; and what proportion of this cost receives Exchequer subsidy.

Mr. Kaufman

The Exchequer subsidy under the Housing Finance Act 1972 is payable in relation to a deficit in an authority's housing revenue account, and not in relation to individual housing schemes. This subsidy is 80 per cent. of the reckonable deficit in 1974–75. The information about costs should be sought from the local authorities concerned.
