HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 c443W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment in view of the Government's decision to abandon the construction of an airport at Maplin, if he will give an estimate of the amounts of money required in the next 10 years to increase road and rail links to London Airport to meet the increase in passenger and freight movement.

Mr. Crosland

The extension of the Piccadilly line from Hounslow West to the airport central area is expected to be completed in 1976 at an estimated cost of £23.5 million. It will provide a substantial increase in capacity for the movement of air passengers and airport workers.

The current trunk road programme includes improvements costing about £2.5 million to the Great South-West Road (A30) and to the Great West Road (A4). A route is under investigation for the west London section of the London orbital route (M25), including a short spur to the airport, at an estimated cost of about £40 million; but no firm date for its construction has been given. All these proposals are components of the national trunk road network but will, also, bring improvements in road access to the airport.
