HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 cc424-5W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of gross national product was spent on health services in each of the member countries of the EEC, in Sweden, Switzerland and the United States of America in 1960 and 1970 and the most recent year for which figures are available.

Dr. Owen

The latest available estimates, so far as I am aware, are those produced by the Social Security Administration of the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare relating to 1969 and covering some of the countries concerned, as follows:

Per cent. of Gross National Product
Netherlands 5.9
France 5.7
United Kingdom 4.8
Sweden 6.7
United States of America 6.8
West Germany 5.7

I regret that no information is available for the years 1960 and 1970.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the annual expenditure on the health services, per capita, in the eight standard English regions during the latest year for which figures are available.

Dr. Owen

I regret this information is not readily available, but the per capita expenditure for regional health authorities is given in my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Sheffield, Heeley (Mr. Hooley) on 5th April.—[Vol. 871, c.489.]
