43. Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places are available in colleges of education for the academic year commencing September 1974; and how this compares with each of the years 1970 to 1973 inclusive.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

Thirty-two thousand places are available in September for non-graduates and 6,900 for graduates. The total of 38,900 places compares with admissions of 39.6, 42.4, 43.2 and 41.2 thousand students in the years 1970 to 1973.

Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the numbers of students at colleges of education who are expected to complete courses in languages other than French, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian at the end of the present academic year; and if he will provide the corresponding figures for 1959, 1964, 1969, 1972 and 1973 specifying the language in each case;

(2) what are the numbers of students at colleges of education in England and Wales who are expected to complete courses in French, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian at the end of the present academic year; and if he will provide the corresponding figures for 1959, 1964, 1969, 1972 and 1973.
