HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 cc405-6W
39. Mr. Bidwell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will initiate a national campaign to explain the health hazards of cigarette smoking to schoolchildren.

Mr. Armstrong

There has been much effort in this area in recent years, and in most if not all secondary schools the hazards of smoking are discussed with pupils. Advice was given in the Department's publication "Smoking and Health in Schools", 1972, and assistance is available through the Health Education Council, who has recently made a film for use by teachers. There may be limits to what the schools can achieve in the face of strong countervailing pressures in society at large which present smoking in attractive terms.
