HC Deb 22 July 1974 vol 877 c318W
Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what increase in the price of sugar to the consumer will be necessary to ensure that domestic sugar beet growing remains profitable during 1975;

(2) what subsidy to the consumer will be necessary to maintain current sugar prices but increase the price of sugar beet so that domestic producers may plan on a profitable crop during 1975;

(3) what steps he proposes to ensure that the increased costs of production are covered in new price levels for sugar beet in 1975.

Mr. Buchan

As I and my right hon. Friend said in replies to the right hon. Member for Cambridgeshire (Mr. Pym) on 4th and 11th July, we recognise the need to offer adequate incentives to growers of home-grown beet and we are looking carefully and sympathetically at the question. We shall announce our decision as soon as possible, but I cannot anticipate that announcement.
