§ Dr. SummerskillIn the three years up to 30th June 1974, 201 persons serving sentences in prisons, borstal institutions or detention centres were transferred to 345W psychiatric hospitals under Section 72 of the Mental Health Act 1959 for treatment for mental disorder. Of these, 152 were suffering from mental illness. During the same period 62 prisoners on remand or awaiting trial or sentence were similarly transferred under Section 73 of the Act. Of these, 61 were suffering from mental illness.
