HC Deb 22 July 1974 vol 877 cc344-5W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many sentenced prisoners are transferred to psychiatric hospitals after diagnosis of mental illness; and how many on remand are similarly transferred.

Dr. Summerskill

In the three years up to 30th June 1974, 201 persons serving sentences in prisons, borstal institutions or detention centres were transferred to psychiatric hospitals under Section 72 of the Mental Health Act 1959 for treatment for mental disorder. Of these, 152 were suffering from mental illness. During the same period 62 prisoners on remand or awaiting trial or sentence were similarly transferred under Section 73 of the Act. Of these, 61 were suffering from mental illness.
