(2) how many people are expected to be admitted for permanent residence in the United Kingdom from Chile over the next six months; and how many have been admitted for permanent residence since 4th March 1974;

(3) what security screening procedures are applied to persons admitted from Chile to this country for permanent residence;

(4) how many people were admitted for permanent residence in the United Kingdom from Chile in the four months preceding 4th March 1974;

(5) what is Her Majesty's Government's policy toward the entry of Chilean refugees into the United Kingdom over the next six months.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Fifty-five applications by refugees from Chile were granted in the four months preceding 4th March 1974 and 262 applications between then and 12th July. One hundred and ninety applications are currently under consideration; but, except in so far as this figure may provide an indication, I cannot say how many applications will be granted during the next six months—no change of policy is contemplated during, this period. Applications are considered sympathetically in the light of the circumstances of each particular case, and approval is subject to personal acceptability. It would not be in the public interest to give details of screening procedures.
