asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of households in Scotland renting accommodation privately; and if he will express this number as a percentage of the total number of households in Scotland.

The 1971 Census showed 288,215 households in Scotland renting their accommodation privately; this was 17 per cent. of the total number of households.
