Mr. Norman Fowler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many graduates have entered the police service in each of the last 10 years; and how many serving policemen have been sent to university to read for degrees in each of the last 10 years.

The numbers of graduates who joined police forces in England and Wales in each of the last six years were:

1971 40
1972 96
1973 70

Figures for earlier years are not available.

The following numbers of serving police officers attended universities under the Bramshill Scholarship Scheme, after attending courses at the Police College:

1966 12
1967 17
1968 20
1969 18
1970 15
1971 22
1972 17
1973 22

In addition, about 15–20 officers a year are sent to university under arrangements made locally. Precise figures are not readily available.

On 31st December 1973, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 458 men and 25 women.
