Mr. John Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will take action to bring more jobs into Irlam in the next four years.

We shall continue our efforts to attract new projects to Irlam. Negotiations are at present in hand with the British Steel Corporation about the building of a 25,000 sq. ft. advance factory on its Irlam site. We are also keeping in close touch with the corporation about the redevelopment of the site.

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many jobs have been lost in Irlam in each of the last four years.

Full details of jobs lost are not available but the following major redundancies in the Irlam employment exchange area have been notified in the last four years:

These figures include BSC redundancies.
