HC Deb 17 July 1974 vol 877 cc170-1W
Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons have been admitted from Chile to the United Kingdom as refugees since 1st March 1974.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Between 1st March and 5th July 260 applications by refugees from Chile for admission to the United Kingdom have been granted. Actual entry figures are not available.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the criterion applied by Her Majesty's Government in deciding whether an applicant from Chile is a refugee and is thus entitled to different treatment from that of other Chilean nationals for immigration purposes.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

If an applicant has a well-founded fear of persecution should he be required to return to his country of nationality his case will come within the formal definition of refugee status; but in practice the criteria are applied with some flexibility, depending both on the circumstances of the particular case and on the general context.
