HC Deb 17 July 1974 vol 877 cc184-5W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the number of people, excluding pensioners, in the South-East Region drawing social security benefit, the classification of cases, and the total drawn for each of the last three years.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

Based on the latest available information, the estimated numbers of social security benefits—other than retirement pension and supplementary pension—in payment in the South-East Region were as given below. The number of people receiving benefit is considerably less because in some cases two or more of these benefits may be received by the same person.

Type Number in thousands
Total number of benefits 2,290
Sickness benefit 107
Invalidity benefit 82
Attendance allowance 44
Injury benefit 8
Disablement benefit 38
Industrial death benefit 30
Maternity benefit 24
Unemployment benefit 80
Widows benefit 174
Supplementary allowance 214
War pension 150
Family allowance 1,322
Family income supplement 17

The total cost of social security benefits—other than retirement pension—in the South-East Region is estimated to have been about £567 million in the 1971–72, £498 million in 1970–71 and £481 million in 1969–70.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the value of social security benefits drawn by people in the South-East Region; and how the count compares with others in East Anglia.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

It is estimated that the total expenditure on social security benefits in the financial year 1971–72 was £1,239 million in the South-East Region and £122 million in the East Anglia Region.
