asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will give further consideration, because of the worsening balance of trade, to trade policies like import controls and export subsidies.

Mr. Shore

No; much of the present deterioration in our balance of trade is due to the sharp increase in the price of oil. It is important that we and the other oil-consuming nations should not seek to solve this problem by general measures restricting trade.
