HC Deb 15 July 1974 vol 877 cc40-1W
Mr. Normanton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to effect greater economy in the use of electricity and natural gas, respectively, by Government Departments.

Mr. Freeson

The Property Services Agency of my Department has issued instructions and advice to all Government Departments urging staff to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances at all times; similar measures for Service establishments are being taken by the Ministry of Defence. The Property Services Agency is also fitting more sophisticated controls to central heating installations in most Government buildings, including Service establishments, which will secure significant savings in boiler fuel consumption by more careful regulation of heating periods and room temperatures.
