Mr. Molloy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether she will refer the question of the prescription of viral hepatitis as an industrial disease to the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council.

Mr. O'Malley

As part of their continuing review of the schedule of prescribed industrial diseases the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council has asked my right hon. Friend to refer to it the problem of viral hepatitis. The council has now been asked for advice on whether viral hepatitis should be prescribed under the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act 1965 and if so for which occupations".

It is hoped that the council will be able to report soon.
