HC Deb 11 July 1974 vol 876 c580W
Mr. R. C. Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultations he has had with the Southampton health and port health authorities concerning atmospheric pollution from sulphur dioxide in the Southampton area; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell

There have been no special consultations with the health authorities. Ground level concentrations of sulphur dioxide in the area are monitored continuously and extra checks have been made during the past few months while new sulphur recovery plant is brought into operation at Fawley oil refinery. Levels of concentration have fluctuated in recent years but they are below those in other urban areas.
