HC Deb 11 July 1974 vol 876 cc575-6W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local authority houses and how many private houses were built in Cheshire during 1970 and for the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. Kaufman

During the year ended 31st March 1974, 2,506 dwellings were reported completed in Cheshire for local authorities and new towns, while 6,056 were completed for the private sector. Corresponding figures for 1970 appear on page 11 of Local Housing Statistics No. 17 which is available in the Library.

Mr. Milne

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what reply he has given to the letter sent to him by the British Woodwork Manufacturers' Association, calling for an increase in house building, house improvement and mortgage arrangements.

Mr. Freeson

The British Woodwork Manufacturers' Association wrote to me on 25th June. I will be replying to the association shortly and will send a copy of my reply to my hon. Friend. The Government have already been active in increasing the supply of mortgage funds, in encouraging more house building in the public and private sectors and in providing assistance for house improvement where it is most needed.
