HC Deb 10 July 1974 vol 876 c503W
Mrs. Colquhoun

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will name the further educational opportunities that are available for deaf school-leavers.

Mr. Armstrong

Further education facilities specially for the deaf and partially hearing are available at

  • Sir James E. Jones School of Vocational Training, Manchester (a department of the Royal School for the Deaf. Cheadle Hulme).
  • Brixton College of Further Education, London.
  • City Literary Institute, London.
  • Matthew Boulton Technical College, Birmingham.
  • North Nottinghamshire College of Further Education, Worksop.

Normal facilities for further education provided by local education authorities are also available to hearing-impaired school leavers, and authorities are increasingly arranging supporting services to enable those with the necessary communication skills to attend ordinary courses.

Mrs. Colquhoun

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will seek to insert into the Education Acts a right of deaf children to be educated, if they desire, to 18 years of age.

Mr. Armstrong

In general terms sections 8(1)(b) and 41(a) of the Education Act 1944 already provide for this. I do not think that the Act should be more specific.
