HC Deb 09 July 1974 vol 876 c470W
Mr. Monro

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will ensure, as far as possible, that the whole length of the A74 and M74 is clear of road reconstruction and single carriageway working, causing bottlenecks, during the period of the Glasgow Fair which brings with it exceptionally heavy traffic.

Mr. William Ross

Both carriageways should be clear in Lanarkshire, but in Dumfriesshire shortage of materials has delayed work due for completion before the Glasgow Fair. The county council, the police forces concerned and the contractor have agreed to clear the northbound carriageway in Dumfries, but to have single lane working on the southbound carriageway where, if there is congestion, some traffic can be diverted to the old road from Kirkpatrick Fleming to Gretna.
