HC Deb 08 July 1974 vol 876 c385W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in how many years the lime subsidy has operated in Scotland; what its value has been in the last four years; and if he can estimate the application of lime per acre in Scotland compared with other areas of the United Kingdom.

Mr. William Ross

Lime subsidy has been paid since 1937; its value in the last four calendar years has been £1.3 million, £1.5 million, £1.3 million and £1.4 million, respectively. Information extracted from the subsidy claim forms shows an average rate of application of about two tons per acre in Scotland, which is similar to Wales but lower than in England and Northern Ireland where the average is about two and a half tons per acre.
