HC Deb 08 July 1974 vol 876 c371W
Mr. Mather

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken to reduce to a minimum the disturbance and inconvenience to local residents of the A244 between Leather-head and Walton, whilst construction of the Esher bypass is going on.

Mr. Carmichael

Pile driving and earth moving operations along the bypass route near its junction with A244 are restricted under the contract to normal daytime working hours. The contractor is also required to properly silence plant and machinery used in areas close to housing, to take all reasonable measures to minimise dust nuisance and generally to keep highways clear of mud and other debris from the works. Much of the material will be hauled along the route of the bypass itself, but A244 is a principal road not subject to any weight restriction and as one of the few public highways which cross the bypass it must be available to the contractor as a haul route. The Department will watch the position closely, but it is in the general interest that work be completed in the shortest possible time.
