§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the state of Her Majesty's Government's relations with Brunei.
§ Mr. HattersleyRelations between Her Majesty's Government and Brunei are governed by the 1959 Agreement (1) as amended in 1971(2). Although Brunei is a sovereign State with full internal self-government, Her Majesty's Government remain responsible for external affairs. There is provision for the two Governments to consult together in the event of an external attack or threat of such attack. We maintain close and friendly contacts with Brunei on all matters of mutual interest through our High Commissioner.—[(1) State Papers Vol. 164, p. 38; (2) Command 4932.]
