HC Deb 04 July 1974 vol 876 cc276-7W
Mr. Bulmer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how the population figures for Worcestershire outside the West Midlands metropolitan area, available at the inception of the Worcestershire structure plan, compare with the most recent figures available to his Department.

Mr. Oakes

In mid-1972, when the Worcestershire structure plan was being prepared, the latest estimate available for the population of the old administrative county of Worcestershire, less the population of Stourbridge and Halesowen, which now forms part of the West Midlands County, was 351,050. This was the estimate for the home population as at June 1971 prepared by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. The most recent estimate available is for June 1973, amounting to 362,290 people.

Mr. Bulmer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how the projections of population growth for Worcestershire outside the West Midlands metropolitan area made by his Department at the inception of the Worcestershire structure plan compare with its most recent projections;

(2) how the projection of the population growth for the West Midlands metropolitan area made by his Department available at the time of the inception of the Worcestershire structure plan compares with its most recent projections.

Mr. Oakes

I am writing to the hon. Member.

Mr. Bulmer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how the population figures for the West Midlands metropolitan area available at the inception of the Worcestershire structure plan compare with the most recent figures available to his Department.

Mr. Oakes

No estimate of population for the West Midlands county area as such was available in mid-1972. The estimate of the 1971 population of the county was produced by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys in 1973, and amounted to 2,792,110 people. The latest estimate available, for June, 1973, amounts to 2,785,460 people.
