asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to replace the piercing of pigs' ears with a more humane method of marking.

Mr. Bishop

Piercing the ears is generally regarded as the most humane practical method of permanent marking. This method was chosen after trying others. It is included in the welfare code for pigs which has been approved by Parliament.
