Mr. Cormack

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much tax in total has been paid by the so-called top 20 companies in each of the past five tax years.

Dr. Gilbert

[pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 27th June] gave the following information:

I assume that the hon. Member has in mind the tax paid by all companies in the groups in question. To assemble the information requested would take about a month, involve an estimated 10,000 man hours of work and cost at least £15,000. This would be a disproportionate expenditure of time and effort.
