Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the number of firms engaged in each of the following industries: (a) shipbuilding, (b) ship repairing and (c) marine engineering, together with the number of employees in each of the industries.

Mr. Meacher

In 1973 30 enterprises were mainly engaged in shipbuilding, 62 in ship repairing and 36 in marine engineering. Average employment was 79,000, 55,000 and 23,000 persons respectively.
