HC Deb 02 July 1974 vol 876 cc109-10W
Mr. Tierney

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he has yet completed his consideration of the Lord O'Brien Committee's findings; and whether he will now propose a permanent ban on the export of live animals;

(2) if, in order to give more work to British slaughtermen and workers in ancillary trades, he will make it his policy to keep home-reared meat for home use and export the surplus in car-case form.

Mr. Bishop

The economic arguments for exporting car-case meat rather than live animals were fully considered by the committee on the export of animals for slaughter. I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to the hon. Member for South Angus (Mr. Bruce-Gardyne) and other hon. Members on 23rd May as regards the Government's intentions on this committe report.—[Vol. 874, c. 588–590].
