HC Deb 01 July 1974 vol 876 cc42-4W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of male employees in Wales and the United Kingdom respectively, in 1961 and 1971.

Mr. John Fraser

In June 1961 the estimated number of male employees in employment in Wales was 672,000 and the estimate for the United Kingdom was 14,661,000. For June 1971 the figures were 603,000 and 13,835,000 respectively.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what has been the number of male employees aged 15 years and over in June of each year since 1964 in Wales; whether he will express these figures as a percentage of the number of males aged 15 years and over in Wales; and whether he will express the male activity rate for Wales in each year as a percentage relative to the male activity rate throughout Great Britain;

(2) what has been the number of female employees aged 15 years and over in June of each year since 1964 in Wales; whether he will express these figures as a percentage of the number of females aged 15 years and over in Wales; and whether he will express the female activity rate for Wales in each year as a percentage relative to the female activity rate throughout Great Britain.

Notes:

1. Estimates from 1969 (b) include improved regional information about the location of employees in employment in the distributive trades.

2. Estimates up to and including 1971 June (a) are on a national insurance card count basis: estimates thereafter are on a Census of Employment basis with the addition of the unemployed.

In the following table, the preceding figures are expressed as a percentage of numbers aged 15 and over in Wales—respectively for males and females:

In the following table, the preceding employee activity rates for Wales are expressed as a percentage relative to the rate throughout Great Britain—respectively for males and females:

Relative Percentage

1964 90 74
1965 89 75
1966 89 75

1971(a) 89 77
1971 (b) 93 81
1972 94 82
1973 94 82

Background Notes

1. The population estimates for Wales, on which the employee activity rates are based are shown below:

Population (thousands)
Year Males Females
1964 990 1,074
1965 1,001 1,070
1966 997 1,082
1967 1,000 1,086
1968 1,003 1,087
1969 1,004 1,086
1970 1,007 1,090
1971 993 1,087
1972 995 1,087
1973 1,003 1,100

2. The variation of employee activity rates between regions takes no account of the sell employed, the armed forces and the retired. The dispersion of activity rates between regions is markedly reduced if these are included.

3. The previous method of calculating annual activity rates has been discontinued and activity rates are now determined using only data from the Censuses of Population. Consequently annual rates are no longer published.
