asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what records he has of the total number of tree preservation orders currently in force.

At 31st December 1972 there were 14,585 tree preservation orders in force in England. The figures for 1973 are being obtained from local planning authorities and I will write to my hon. Friend when the returns are complete.
